The Formula

Grade Points per Course = Credit Units × Grade Point Value Semester GPA = Σ(Credit Units × Grade Points) ÷ Σ(Credit Units) Example: 3 courses - Math: 3 units × A (5.0) = 15 points - English: 2 units × B (4.0) = 8 points - Physics: 3 units × BC (3.5) = 10.5 points GPA = (15 + 8 + 10.5) ÷ (3 + 2 + 3) = 33.5 ÷ 8 = 4.19 → Second Class Upper

FAQ

Most Nigerian universities use the 5-point scale with the classification thresholds shown above. However, a few universities (including some private universities and those with international affiliations) use a 4-point scale similar to the US system. Some universities also use slightly different grade labels (e.g., some use A/B/C/D/E/F, others use letter-number combinations). Always check your university's official academic regulations for the exact grading scale.
On the 5-point Nigerian scale, you need a Cumulative GPA (CGPA) of 4.50 or above for First Class Honours. This requires averaging mostly A and AB grades (5.0 and 4.5 grade points) across all credit units throughout your degree programme. Note that semester GPA can fluctuate — what matters for your degree classification is your CGPA at graduation, calculated over all semesters. Use our CGPA Calculator to track your cumulative performance.
A failed course (F grade = 0 points) significantly drags down your GPA. Most Nigerian universities require you to carry over and retake failed courses in subsequent semesters. Some universities allow supplementary examinations within the same semester. The original failing grade may remain on your transcript even if you later pass the repeat — policies vary by institution. Retaking a course generally allows the new grade to replace or average with the old one for CGPA purposes, depending on university policy.
