FAQ

Nigerian markets predominantly use kilograms for goods weighed on scales — tomatoes, meat, fish, yam, and produce are all sold by the kg. However, palm oil is often sold by the litre or jerry can. Grain and rice may be sold by "paint bucket" (roughly 1.5 kg for garri, 2 kg for rice per bucket). Weight standards are enforced by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON).
The standard "big bag" of rice in Nigeria is 50 kg. Half-bag is 25 kg. Smaller "mudu" portions vary by region but a mudu of rice is typically 1–1.5 kg. International brands sell 1 kg, 2 kg, 5 kg, and 10 kg retail packs. For shipping calculations: 50 kg bags stack well for truck transport.
In everyday use, "weight" and "mass" are used interchangeably. Technically: mass is the amount of matter in an object (measured in kg) and weight is the force of gravity on that mass (measured in Newtons). A 70 kg person has a mass of 70 kg everywhere in the universe, but their weight changes on the Moon. This distinction matters in physics but not for everyday conversions.
