FAQ
Tipping is not as institutionalised in Nigeria as in the US, but it is common in higher-end restaurants in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt. Many upscale restaurants include a 10% service charge automatically. For regular eateries and buka joints, rounding up the bill or leaving small change is customary. Street food and fast food stalls do not expect tips.
Yes. Restaurants, hotels, and most formal dining establishments are required to charge 7.5% VAT under FIRS regulations. This is usually included in menu prices or added on the receipt. Our VAT Calculator can help you calculate the pre-tax amount or verify the VAT portion of your bill.
For sit-down restaurants in Lagos: 5–10% is appreciated; 15% for excellent service. For hotel room service: ₦500–₦1,000 per delivery. Taxi and Uber drivers: rounding up to the nearest ₦500 or ₦1,000 is common. Hairdressers and barbers: ₦200–₦500 tip is customary for good work. These are norms, not obligations.
