FAQ

Nigerian banks (and banks worldwide) require cheque amounts in both figures and words as a fraud prevention measure. If the numerical amount is altered, the written amount takes precedence. The CBN's Guidelines on Cheques require both fields to be completed, and a bank can return or reject a cheque where figures and words don't match.
For very large payments in Nigeria (above ₦5 million), electronic transfer via RTGS or NEFT is required rather than cheques per CBN policy. However, the words format is still needed for contracts, payment letters, and appropriation documentation. Use "Billion" for 10⁹ and "Million" for 10⁶ — avoid "Milliard" which is not standard in Nigerian English.
Write kobo as a fraction on cheques: "Five Thousand Naira 50/100" or "Five Thousand Naira and Fifty Kobo Only". The word "Only" at the end is important — it signals that no additional amount should be added. For round amounts, write "Five Thousand Naira Only" without kobo mention.
