How to Use This Calculator
Enter your body weight in kg, choose your typical activity level, and select your climate. Nigeria's tropical climate means most Nigerians need more water than standard international recommendations. The calculator adds activity and climate adjustments on top of the base weight-based amount.
The Formula
Base Water = Weight (kg) × 0.033 litres
Activity Additions:
Sedentary: +0.0 L
Light: +0.3 L
Moderate: +0.5 L
Active: +0.75 L
Climate Addition:
Hot/Tropical: +0.5 L
Temperate: +0.0 L
Total = Base + Activity + Climate
Example
Adaeze: 65 kg, moderately active, lives in Lagos (hot)
Base (65 × 0.033)2.15 L
Activity (moderate)+0.5 L
Climate (hot)+0.5 L
Total Daily Need3.15 L ≈ 13 glasses
FAQ
Yes. About 20% of daily water intake comes from food — particularly fruits, vegetables, soups, and stews. Traditional Nigerian foods like egusi soup, okra, and fresh fruits contribute significantly to hydration. The calculator gives the total water target including beverages; you can subtract roughly 0.5 L for food water if tracking beverages only.
Yes, drinking excessively more water than the kidneys can process (more than about 1 litre per hour) can cause hyponatraemia (low blood sodium), which is dangerous. This is rare in ordinary life but has happened during extreme endurance events. Drinking your calculated amount spread throughout the day is completely safe.
Most international water recommendations are based on temperate climates. Nigeria's average temperature is 25–35°C with high humidity in southern areas. Sweating is the primary cooling mechanism and requires significant fluid replacement. During harmattan and hot-season peaks in the north, needs can be even higher than this calculator suggests.
