How to Use This Calculator

Enter your height in centimetres and select your gender. The calculator shows ideal weight using three methods: the Devine formula (medical standard), Robinson formula, and the healthy BMI range. Most health professionals use the BMI range as it gives a span rather than a single number.

The Formula

Devine Formula: Male: 50.0 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60) Female: 45.5 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60) Robinson Formula: Male: 52.0 + 1.9 × (height in inches − 60) Female: 49.0 + 1.7 × (height in inches − 60) BMI Range (18.5–24.9): Min = 18.5 × height² (m²) Max = 24.9 × height² (m²) Height in inches = Height (cm) ÷ 2.54

Example

FAQ

No single-number formula is truly "accurate" because ideal weight varies with muscle mass, bone density, and body frame. The BMI range (18.5–24.9) is most widely used because it gives a realistic span. For muscular individuals, the upper end of the BMI range is more appropriate. The Devine formula was originally developed for drug dosing in clinical medicine, not fitness assessment.
Nigerian hospitals and clinics use the same international WHO BMI standards. There is ongoing research suggesting that Africans may have different cardiometabolic risk profiles at given BMI levels, but no separate Nigerian ideal weight standard has been formally adopted. Waist circumference is an increasingly used additional metric.
These formulas are designed for adults. Children and teenagers use age-specific growth charts (BMI-for-age percentiles) rather than absolute weight targets. Nigerian growth charts developed by the Paediatric Association of Nigeria are used in clinical settings. Consult a paediatrician for children's weight assessment.
