How to Use This Calculator

Enter your estimated monthly electricity consumption in kWh. The calculator shows what your bill would be under each of the 5 NERC bands (A through E), helping you understand how electricity costs compare across Nigeria's service tiers.

NERC tariff rates are updated periodically. These rates reflect the 2024 service-reflective tariff (SRT) order. Check your electricity bill or NERC's website for the most current rates.

FAQ

Your band is determined by your DISCO (Distribution Company) based on actual supply hours to your metering area. Check your electricity bill — the band should be printed on it. If you believe you are being billed at a higher band than you receive, you can file a complaint with your DISCO customer service or NERC's consumer protection unit at nerc.gov.ng. Band A customers in Lagos are primarily in GRA areas served by EKEDC.
Average Nigerian household electricity consumption (when available): small apartment 50–100 kWh/month; medium home with AC 150–300 kWh/month; large home with multiple ACs 400–800 kWh/month. These are low compared to global averages because Nigerians supplement with generators. If you had 24/7 PHCN supply, actual consumption would likely be much higher as people would use more electrical appliances.
The Band A rate of ₦225/kWh is significantly higher than other bands but reflects the premium cost of providing 20+ hours of reliable power. Compared to the full-cost-of-diesel-generation equivalent (a 2.5kVA generator producing ~2kW costs ₦900/hr ÷ 2kW = ₦450/kWh), Band A grid electricity is still much cheaper than self-generation. The NERC framework aims to make electricity commercially viable to attract distribution investment.
