How to Use This Calculator

Estimate Bill Tab

Select your NERC tariff band (check your meter or ask your distribution company) and enter your monthly consumption in kWh. The calculator shows your estimated bill, annual cost, and how many kWh you get per ₦1,000.

Compare Bands Tab

Enter a kWh usage and instantly see what the same consumption would cost across all five bands — Band A through Band E. Useful for understanding the cost implication of different supply quality levels.

NERC Tariff Bands

Estimated Bill = Monthly kWh × Tariff Rate (₦/kWh) NERC Tariff Bands (2026): Band A — 20-24 hrs/day supply — ₦225/kWh Band B — 16-20 hrs/day supply — ₦63/kWh Band C — 12-16 hrs/day supply — ₦50/kWh Band D — 8-12 hrs/day supply — ₦40/kWh Band E — 4-8 hrs/day supply — ₦30/kWh Note: These rates are indicative. NERC reviews tariffs periodically and distribution companies may add charges.

Band A has a significantly higher tariff because customers receive near-continuous power supply — the higher rate funds the infrastructure cost. Bands D and E have lower rates but much less reliable supply.

Example

Scenario: Household Estimate

Folake's home in Victoria Island (Band A) uses approximately 200 kWh per month. How much is her estimated bill?

Tariff bandBand A (20+ hrs/day)
Monthly consumption200 kWh
Rate₦225/kWh
Bill = 200 × ₦225₦45,000
Annual bill₦540,000

The same 200 kWh on Band E would cost only ₦6,000 — but Band E customers typically receive only 4–8 hours of power per day and rely heavily on generators, which often cost more than the electricity savings.

How to Reduce Your Electricity Bill

FAQ

Your distribution company (DisCo) assigns your tariff band based on your location and the expected hours of supply in your area. Check your electricity bill, prepaid meter receipt, or contact your DisCo's customer service. Common DisCos include Eko Electricity, Ikeja Electric, Enugu DISCO, and Kano Electric.
Band A's high rate reflects the cost of providing near-continuous power supply (20+ hours per day). NERC's service-based tariff system ensures that customers who receive better service pay a cost-reflective rate. The lower rates for Bands D and E reflect the lower service quality those customers receive.
Consumption varies widely. A basic apartment with a few lights, a fan, and a small refrigerator might use 50–100 kWh per month. A family home with air conditioning could use 200–500 kWh. High-end homes with central AC and multiple large appliances can exceed 1,000 kWh. Check your prepaid meter history for your actual consumption.
The band structure (A–E) is national, set by NERC. However, the actual rates can vary slightly between DisCos and are subject to periodic review. Always check with your DisCo for the most current tariff in your specific location.
