How to Use This Calculator

Calculate CGPA Tab

Add all your registered courses with their credit units and grades. You can add as many courses as needed. The CGPA and degree class update instantly as you enter each grade. Use the × button to remove a course.

What Grade Do I Need Tab

Enter your current CGPA, how many credit units you have already completed, the remaining credit units in your programme, and your target CGPA. The calculator tells you the minimum GPA you need to achieve on your remaining courses to hit your target.

The Formula

Quality Points per Course = Credit Units × Grade Point Total Quality Points = Sum of all Quality Points CGPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Units Nigerian 5-Point Grade Scale: A = 5.0 (70–100%) B = 4.0 (60–69%) C = 3.0 (50–59%) D = 2.0 (45–49%) E = 1.0 (40–44%) F = 0.0 (0–39%) Degree Class: First Class: 4.50–5.00 Second Upper: 3.50–4.49 Second Lower: 2.40–3.49 Third Class: 1.50–2.39 Pass: 1.00–1.49 Required GPA = (Target CGPA × Total Credits − Current CGPA × Current Credits) ÷ Remaining Credits

Example

Funmi's first semester results at UNILAG

CHM 101 (4 units, A)20 quality points
MTH 101 (3 units, B)12 quality points
PHY 101 (3 units, A)15 quality points
ENG 101 (2 units, C)6 quality points
GST 101 (2 units, B)8 quality points
Total Credits14 units
Total Quality Points61
CGPA4.36 (Second Upper)

To achieve First Class (4.50+) with 90 remaining credits, Funmi needs an average GPA of approximately 4.56 on her remaining courses — meaning mostly A grades going forward.

Nigerian University Grading System

Most Nigerian universities use the 5-point grading scale mandated by the National Universities Commission (NUC). However, some universities have slight variations:

Important: Always verify your university's specific grading scale. This calculator uses the standard NUC 5-point scale used by most federal and state universities in Nigeria.

FAQ

On the Nigerian 5-point scale, a CGPA of 4.50 or above qualifies for First Class Honours. This is typically equivalent to scoring 70% or above in most courses across your programme. Only about 3–8% of graduates from most universities achieve First Class — it requires consistent A and B grades throughout your programme.
Yes, but the scope for improvement depends on how many credits remain. If you have completed 80% of your total credits with a 3.20 CGPA, improving to Second Upper (3.50) in the remaining 20% is very difficult — you would need an unrealistically high GPA on the remaining courses. The "What Grade Do I Need" tab calculates this exactly for your situation.
Yes. A Second Upper (3.50–4.49 CGPA) is still highly regarded by Nigerian employers including banks, consulting firms, oil companies, and tech firms. Many large employers set Second Upper as the minimum requirement. Second Lower graduates face more competition for graduate roles, though professional certifications and experience can compensate.
Yes. In most Nigerian universities, when you repeat a carry-over course, the new grade replaces the failed grade (F) in the GPA calculation. However, the F grade typically remains on your transcript. Always check your university's specific policy — some use the best grade, others average both attempts. Clearing carry-overs quickly minimises their drag on your CGPA.
