How to Use This Calculator

Discount % Tab

Enter the original price and the discount percentage to instantly see the sale price and how much you (or your customer) saves.

Find Discount % Tab

Know the original price and the sale price? This reverse calculator finds the exact discount percentage being applied — useful for verifying promotions or working backwards from a quoted sale price.

The Formula

Savings = Original Price × (Discount% ÷ 100) Sale Price = Original Price − Savings Reverse: Discount % = (Original − Sale Price) ÷ Original × 100

Example

Abuja Mall Black Friday Deal

Original Price₦50,000
Discount20%
Savings₦10,000
Sale Price₦40,000

Watch out for fake discounts where the "original" price is inflated. Use the reverse tab to verify: if a retailer claims 50% off and the sale price is ₦25,000, the original should be ₦50,000 — anything less means the claimed discount % is exaggerated.

FAQ

Multiple discounts do not simply add up. A 20% discount followed by a 10% discount is not 30% off — it is 28% off. Calculate step by step: apply the first discount to get the intermediate price, then apply the second discount to that intermediate price. For example: ₦100,000 − 20% = ₦80,000, then ₦80,000 − 10% = ₦72,000 (28% total discount, not 30%).
Your maximum safe discount equals your profit margin. If you have a 35% margin, you can offer up to 35% discount and still break even on each unit (before fixed cost allocation). A common rule: keep discounts at less than half your gross margin. If your margin is 40%, limit promotions to 15–20% so you still cover overhead and make a net profit.
In Nigeria, VAT at 7.5% is applied to the final selling price after discount. Example: Original ₦50,000, 20% discount → Sale price ₦40,000, then VAT = ₦40,000 × 7.5% = ₦3,000, so the VAT-inclusive price is ₦43,000. Use our VAT Calculator alongside this tool for full invoicing calculations.
